Evacuation Monument for the Airborne Units

In the night of 25 September British soldiers were evacuated over the Rhine. The evacuation was planned by 2nd Army, because they thought it would not make any sense to fight the German on and on. The Royal Engineers and the Royal Canadian Engineers worked all night in order to save as many people as possible. All the Airborne soldiers were tired, because they had fought bravely against the enemy. Some could not resist the long waiting and tried to swim across the Rhine.
That's why you can often find graves of those men in villages near the Rhine. Many died, because they would swim with their clothes on. For the brave Engineers there was never any honour like a monument, but in 1989 the monument was built in half a year.
