21st. Independent Parachute Cie/Oosterbeek Crossroads

In 1944 a Brengun fired from this spot. The monument was established for the 21st Independent Parachute Company, the Pathfinders. They had to mark the landing zones for the rest of the Division, so 21st Cie had to land first. They fought in this house, which is near the crossroads Utrechtseweg-Stationsweg.
The crossroads became famous, because David Sheperd painted the situation on it in 1944 during the Battle. Sheperd also painted the Arnhem bridge. This painting is the cover of Ryan's book 'A Bridge Too Far'. On this same crossroads you can find the former Hotel Schoonoord, which was an hospital during the battle.
